Name a visual artist and/or author whose work embodies what you do musically:
I’d say Ezra Jack Keats or Tomie DePaola; stuff that, for a child reader, had the lighthearted sense of motion and color with a bigger awareness of stillness and invisible things.
Where were you born and where do you live now:
I was born in Aitkin in west-central Minnesota and grew up in Duluth. Now I live in Red Hook, Brooklyn. By the water.
If you had to move, where would you choose:
Way Out West!
Name something you miss about your hometown:
The air, the water, and the almost perpetual hillside view of Lake Superior that can always offer perspective if you need it.
What is your favorite vernacular phrase/device of your hometown:
‘Shrrr, shrrr….gunna hid up dare now. A’rite, see ya soooon.’
What is one thing you hope a listener takes from your music:
A bright idea they can dance with.
What is your favorite weather condition:
I feel great when I’m out walking around and a sun-shower starts up. Or when I’m sleeping late at night and come awake enough to hear a huge thunderstorm clearing the air outside.
Favorite food/drink:
I think I could live on Mediterranean food—Greek, Israeli, Turkish, whatever. Sushi’s great, too…
What is something you find funny:
When kids try and relate with animals. And vice versa, like in the ‘Good Dog, Carl’ kids books.
What is your favorite sound, musical or not:
Dead silence—lightning, thunder, heavy rain—silence and a little rustling. And a loon-call at night, I just found out. A bunch of hand claps or footsteps can be pretty moving.
What is a non musical event that has influenced your music:
Less of an event, but just the everyday work world in social services being with and around people who have been through a lot of difficulty and meeting people who still see goodness.
What do you like best about the internet:
The positive communities that can build up out of good folks’ ideas, like PRIMARY RECORDS and the musicians and friends that make it up!
What animal do you most relate to:
I was told I was a tiger once, and I’m believing it more now. But I’ve always thought of gorillas as noble creatures, my favorite group of animals.
What’s your favorite mode of transportation:
M’feets.
If you weren’t a musician, what occupation would you most enjoy:
Zoologist. Thought about that a lot when I was 10, still think about it.
What is one song you wish you wrote:
Water’s Looking Fine or Death By Sea Air- In One Wind
