Killer BOB

Killer BOB

As answered by Dave Scanlon and Rob Lundberg:

Name a visual artist and/or author whose work embodies what you do musically:

Max: I think George Carlin has impeccable timing and Mark Rothko’s work is wonderfully textured.

Dave:  Marina Abramovic- I am a sucker for conceptual art which I believe is reflected in killer BOB’s work. The works of art that I love most are conceptually important/interesting and have an immediate impact. Abramovic is a genius at this…Tehching Hsieh is a close second.

Rob: “Portrait of Ambroise Vollard” by Pablo Picasso is the best explanation I’ve found in any medium to explain my musical goals generally.

Where were you born and where do you live now:

Dave: Annapolis, MD -> Brooklyn, NY

Rob: Milwaukee, WI -> Brooklyn, NY

If you had to move, where would you choose:

Dave: Talkeetna, AK- I love the landscape and the feeling of the land on the south side of the Alaska range.

Rob: short term- Philadelphia or Chicago; long term: Alaska or Argentina, because those are two of the few places that will still have a decent water supply by the time my generation is elderly.

Name something you miss about your hometown:

Dave: a slower walking pace.

Rob: bratwurst.

What is your favorite vernacular phrase/device of your hometown:

Rob: “the ill Mil”, though I’m not sure if anyone other than myself refers to Milwaukee that way.

What is one thing you hope a listener takes from your music:

Dave: Imagination is a huge part of creativity but it is something that is on my mind always while working on killer BOB material. Trying to imagine something, which is real to me but has not been fleshed out. Or if there is a conceptual idea that I am dealing with I maybe trying to imagine how the concept could be reflected or performed musically. Turning something from your imagination into a piece of music which is playable (or in the case of a few recent pieces doing this process collectively) usually involves a combination of writing down in words what I am hearing/thinking, singing and transcribing it, and looking for it on the piano. It is time consuming but I love it. I guess what I am trying to explain is that I hope a listener can hear both a genuine sense of searching in the music and an “other-worldliness”, something they never imagined. Hopefully, these senses are also reflected in the performance of the music.

Max: Joy

What is your favorite weather condition:

Dave and Rob: Snow.

Max:  Fog in the morning.

Favorite food/drink:

Rob: Cheese danish- whenever I find a decent looking one (especially when traveling) I feel compelled to buy/eat it.

Max: My mom’s jap chae (Korean noodle dish). Ice cold water.

What is something you find funny:

My friend Cody Simmons.

What is your favorite sound, musical or not:

Rob: Recently my new low B string on my Steinberger 5 string bass.

Dave: Rob’s low B string.

What is a non musical event that has influenced your music:

Backpacking/camping.

What do you like best about the internet:

Free pornography and cat videos, DUH.

What animal do you most relate to:

Dave: There are these insects called gall wasps. They are super interesting because they have a beautiful symbiotic relationship with, I believe, oak trees. The wasp lays its egg in the bud of a new branch, which causes the tree to develop a growth/tumor thing while the egg develops. Then, when it hatches, the wasp stays with that tree, and lives off of parasites n’ bad stuff that would harm the tree. Cool huh? This is how I remember it, I don’t know if it is scientifically accurate at all. But this question is crazy and I don’t know what animal I relate to.

Max: Anything that flies.

What’s your favorite mode of transportation:

Bicycle.

If you weren’t a musician, what occupation would you most enjoy:

Rob: I wanted to be an architect for most of my childhood.

Dave: Lunatic wilderness madman, I’m pretty sure that counts as an occupation.

What is one song you wish you wrote:

The Beatles “In My Life”

Joanna Newsom “Sawdust & Diamonds”

John Cage “In a Landscape”

Rage Against the Machine “Down Rodeo”

Sorry, that is more than one song…
